NetWorker: Active Job Status Not Displayed in the NWUI Dashboard after Reboot

Summary: After a server reboot that occurred without properly shutting down the NetWorker service, the UI-driven processes exhibit abnormal behavior. Jobs initiated using the UI do not show real-time updates or progress, and the only visible change in the UI is the "Save Session" update, while other job-related feedback is missing. ...

Symptoms

  • After NetWorker server reboot, the running Jobs status on the NetWorker Web User Interface (NWUI) dashboard is not visible. It consistently shows zero (0) running jobs.

NWUI active sessions are not shown

  • All required ports (9095, 5671, 5435) are open and in listening modem per article NetWorker Processes and Ports
  • There are no errors in the NWUI logs.
  • The NWUI server used is deployed locally on a Linux NetWorker server.

Cause

A timing mismatch during system boot causes this issue. Both the NetWorker service and the NWUI service start simultaneously, which can lead to NWUI initializing before NetWorker is fully operational. In a properly functioning environment, the NetWorker service should be fully running before NWUI starts.

Resolution

Introduce a delay in the NWUI service startup to allow NetWorker services to initialize first.

Steps to Implement:

  1. Locate and Edit the NWUI service unit file.
/opt/nwui/scripts/nwui.service
  1. Modify the [Service] section to include a delay.
[Service]
Type=forking
User=root
ExecStartPre=/bin/sleep 30
ExecStart=/opt/nwui/scripts/nwui.sh start
ExecStop=/opt/nwui/scripts/nwui.sh stop
Restart=on-failure
  1. Reload the systemd daemon and restart the service.
systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl restart nwui

On the next server reboot, the NWUI service should wait 30 seconds before starting, ensuring that NetWorker services are fully up and running. This helps restore visibility of active jobs in the NWUI dashboard.

Additional Information

  • You can adjust the delay duration (sleep 30) based on your environment’s startup timing.
  • Ensure that the NetWorker services are enabled and configured to start at boot.
