Dell U3421WE Monitor has No Video with a DA305 USB-C Multiport Adapter Connection on Certain Latitude and Precision Laptops

Symptoms

No video when using the USB-C connection on the U3421WE monitor when it is connected to a DA305, then to a Latitude 5431 or Precision 3470 laptop with a USB-C cable.

Cause

With the DA305 in between the laptop and the U3421WE monitor, it is possible that the under voltage protect circuitry is triggered. This shuts down the power delivery controller.

Resolution

The following can be done to avoid this behavior.

  1. Use an HDMI or DisplayPort (DP) connection from the DA305 to the U3421WE monitor instead of using a USB-C connection from the DA305.
  2. Use a USB-C connection directly from the U3421WE monitor to the Latitude 5431 or Precision 3470 laptop.
