PPDM: SQL backup failure | Error 63: Unable to access .ddbmcon.gatherinfo file

Symptoms

  • Backup job fails with the following error:
    Files\DPSAPPS\MSAPPAGENT\bin\ddbmsqlsv.exe' failed with error code -1073741819
    PowerProtect Data Manager error 63: Unable to access .ddbmcon.gatherinfo file from settings folder
    
  • Backup logs show failure to locate .ddbmcon.gatherinfo in the expected directory
  • No .ddbmcon.gatherinfo file present in C:\Program Files\DPSAPPS\MSAPPAGENT\settings

Cause

The .ddbmcon.gatherinfo file is missing from the SQL host's agent settings directory. Although this file is typically 0 bytes in size, its absence causes the SQL agent process (ddbmsqlsv.exe) to fail during backup operations.

  • Default Agent Settings Location: C:\Program Files\DPSAPPS\MSAPPAGENT\settings

 

Resolution

Manually create the missing .ddbmcon.gatherinfo file on the SQL host:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Navigate to the settings directory:
    cd "C:\Program Files\DPSAPPS\MSAPPAGENT\settings"
    
  3. Create the file using the following command:
    copy con .ddbmcon.gatherinfo
    
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Press Ctrl + Z, then Enter again.

This creates a 0-byte .ddbmcon.gatherinfo file, resolving the backup failure.
