Running a failover

Use this procedure to failover the source role to the target system.

About this task

If the system is not healthy, you can failover the source role to the target system. When the source is compromised, data from the host stops sending I/Os to the source volume, replication is then stopped, and the target system takes on the role of source. The host on the target starts sending I/Os to the volume. The target takes on the role of source, and the source takes on the role of target.

There are two options when choosing to failover a remote consistency group (RCG):
  • Switchover -This option is a complete synchronization and failover between the source and the target. Application I/Os are stopped at the source, and the source and target volumes are synchronized. Access mode is changed of the target volumes to the target host, the roles are switched, and finally new source volumes access mode are changed to read/write.
  • Latest PiT - The system prevents any write to the source volumes.

Prerequisites

Before performing failover, ensure you stop the application and unmount the file-systems at the source (if the source is available). Target volumes are only be mapped after performing a failover. Target volumes can also be mapped using scli.

Steps

  1. From the PowerFlex GUI, in the left pane, click Protection > RCGs.
  2. In the right pane, select the relevant RCG check box, and click More > Failover.
  3. In the Failover RCG <RCG name> dialog box, select one of the following options:
    • Switchover: (sync and failover)
    • Latest PiT: (date and time)
  4. Click Apply Failover.
  5. In the RCG <RCG name> Sync & Failover dialog box, click Proceed.
  6. Verify that the operation completed successfully and click Dismiss.
  7. From the top right, click Running Jobs and check the progress of the failover.
