XPS 13 9340 LCD has Lines When Using the Touchpad After Installing a Non-Dell Ubuntu Operating System

Symptoms

After reinstalling Ubuntu from another source that is not Dell.com, it will cause the LCD video to show lines when using the touchpad. Moving the mouse cursor, dragging files, or scrolling a file list are some examples.

Cause

This behavior is caused by the installation of a non-Dell Ubuntu Operating System image.

Resolution

Ubuntu 22.04 From Dell.com

Install the latest version of Ubuntu 22.04 from Dell.com to resolve the issue.

Note: If you install an Operating System that is not the original Operating System that came with your computer, you do so at your own risk. Dell is unable to certify hardware compatibility, and we may not be able to support computers with that configuration.
  1. Go to the Dell Drivers Website.
  2. Enter the Service Tag and click Search.

  3. Select Drivers and downloads and then click Find the driver.

  4. Select Ubuntu 22.04 LTS in the Operating System section then download the Ubuntu recovery image.

  5. Create a bootable drive.
    1. Download and install the Rufus tool (https://rufus.ie/ This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.). It is a tool for creating a bootable drive.

    2. Open the Rufus tool and insert the prepared USB flash drive (the flash drive will be erased).
    3. In Rufus, select the downloaded Ubuntu image file, leave other settings as default (automatically recognized), and then click "START" to create a bootable USB drive.

  6. After the bootable USB drive is ready, insert it into the XPS 13 9340.
  7. Power the XPS 13 9340 on, press the F12 key to boot to the One Time Boot Menu, and select the bootable USB drive as UEFI Boot Devices.
  8. The XPS 13 9340 will restart. The Dell recovery interface should appear. Select Restore entire hard drive to continue.

  9. The recovery process begins, this can take several minutes to complete.

  10. After the recovery process, the XPS 13 9340 will auto restart, and then show the system configuration page. Complete the following settings:
    Ubuntu System Configuration, Language 
    Ubuntu System Configuration, Dell End User License Agreement 
    Ubuntu System Configuration, Keyboard Layout 
    Ubuntu System Configuration, Wireless Network Selection 
    Ubuntu System Configuration, World Location Section 
  11. Enter your wanted User Name and Password.

  12. Continue with the default settings and wait for the XPS 13 9340 configuration to complete.

  13. The XPS 13 9340 will auto restart.
  14. After the restart, set the following settings as default, and the XPS 13 9340 can be used.

    Ubuntu, You're Ready To Go
