Symptoms

External screen settings are not kept past a reboot on new Dell Chrome Latitudes

There is an orientation issue that can happen depending on the settings chosen for an external screen added to a Latitude running the Chrome Operating System.

This happens with the following settings chosen:

  • Extend or transfer your internal display to the external screen
  • Set a non-native resolution
  • Start rotating the screen through its various orientations (90, 180, 270)

It is working as configured.

However, once the laptop reboots the external screen returns to defaults and it must be configured again.

This affects the following products:

  • Latitude 5300 2-in-1 Chromebook Enterprise
  • Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise
  • Chromebook 3100 2-in-1
  • Chromebook 3100

Cause

Note: This issue only occurs after setting a non-native resolution on the external display.

Resolution

A temporary workaround is to keep to the native resolution or continue to reset the external screen whenever it is needed.

Google released the auto-update Release 78 to resolve this issue permanently. (The release date from Google is the end of 2019.) Ensure that the laptop is running the latest version of the Chrome operating system available for your Chromebook.
