Resolving the Dell Logo Flickering after Resuming from Hibernation and Changing the Monitor

Symptoms

Dell computer owners identified an issue where the Dell Logo on their monitor screen flickers. This has been seen on some models of ChengMing, Inspiron, Vostro, XPS, Latitude, and Precision computers, under one of the following two conditions:

  1. You change the original monitor to another monitor which has a different native resolution, while in the operating system and then you enter hibernation, and then the computer resumes from hibernation and displays this flickering logo

  2. You enter hibernation, then you change the original monitor to another monitor which has a different native resolution, and then resume the computer from hibernation and it displays the flickering logo

NOTE: This issue does not happen with the following two scenarios:
  1. You keep the same monitor but change out for different media cable (For example: HDMI to VGA)

  2. You change the original monitor to another monitor, but that new monitor shares the same resolution as the original monitor

Cause

No cause information is available.

Resolution

The issue occurs because the operating system cannot immediately recognize the new monitor's properties when it resumes from hibernation.

When this happens the operating system forces a restore to the 4:3 resolution (1280x1024). This lasts until it identifies the new monitor's aspect ratio, and the temporary aspect ratio distorts the startup animation.

Rebooting or restarting the computer fixes this issue, since the new resolution is restored after a restart or reboot.
