Symptoms

The Dell Dual Charge Dock (HD22Q) automatically shuts down when connecting a Latitude 9420 laptop. Where the laptops main battery is less than 80% charged.

Cause

Enabling Express charge in the Latitude 9420 laptop BIOS and the battery charge status drops below 80%. The laptops charge design triggers the Over Currency Protection (OCP) on the HD22Q docks side.

This is a hardware limitation of the Latitude 9420 laptop that cannot be changed. This is because it is no longer being updated and has been replaced over time with several refreshed models.

Resolution

Follow these steps to disable the Express charging option in your BIOS Setup.

  1. Turn on your laptop or reboot it.
  2. Press "F2" key when the Dell splash screen appears to boot into the setup screens.
  3. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate down to Power in the BIOS screen.
  4. Go to Battery Configuration and change Express Charge to Standard.
  5. Exit and save the changes in the BIOS and the laptop restarts into the operating system.
