Precision 7960 Tower Service Manual

Password feature support with only one VMD controller

Issue: Precision 7960 Tower supports HDD/SSD password feature with only one VMD controller. You can set the password for SSD/HDD that are connected through the VMD controller.

Cause: Precision 7960 Tower supports multiple VROC VMD controllers. However, there is only one VMD controller that supports the password feature.

Table 1. ResolutionThe following table provides the resolution for the above-mentioned issue.
Resolution
For SATA hard drive The SATA hard-drive password is supported only on VROC VMD configuration but not with MegaRAID card.
For solid-state drive Rule 1: All PCIe NVMe passwords are supported on AHCI mode.
Rule 2: On RAID-on mode, only non-RAID volume NVMe is supported with the following behavior.

The NVMe in the front flexbays, rear flexbays, or Zoom card can support the password feature if those NVMe SSDs are booting the operating system.

Rule 3: When changing the bootable hard drive, hard drive position, or RAID volume configuration, ensure to clear all the HDD password.
  • Without clearing the HDD password, the computer may not boot because the HDD password cannot be unlocked especially when you change the hard-drive supported flex bays or zoom card to unsupported flexbays or zoom card.
  • You may experience no POST if you do not follow Rule 3. To troubleshoot the no POST, do the following:
    • Roll back your hard-drive position to the original configuration and boot into the original operating system hard drive.
    • Enter BIOS setup menu and change the SATA mode to RAID On mode. Also, clear all the HDD passwords that are set to all hard drives.
