PowerProtect Data Manager 19.16 Virtual Machine User Guide

Copy Management

To locate one or more specific copies of a protected asset from a list of all available asset copies, you can use the advanced search and filter functionality within the Infrastructure > Copy Management window. Any user with the privilege to View Copies from the Infrastructure > Assets window also has permissions to access copy management.

  1. Go to Infrastructure > Copy Management.
  2. Select the asset type tab, for example Virtual Machine. The copies of all available protected assets display. You can use the sort icons within the table columns to sort by Asset Name, Asset Type, Copy Status, and so on, or click the gear icon to add other columns to the table, such as the retention date and time, storage unit name, and copy size.
  3. Select one or more asset copies. When a copy is selected, you can switch between two views — All Copies (the default view), and Selected Copies, which displays only the asset copies that you have selected.

When the checkbox next to an asset copy is selected, you can perform the following actions, similar to when you click View Copies from the Infrastructure > Assets window:

  • Edit the retention period for a selected asset copy. Note that Edit Retention is disabled for SQL VM Direct asset copies.
  • Delete one or more selected asset copies.
  • Remove the copy record from PowerProtect Data Manager for any asset copy in Deletion Failed or Delete Catalog Failed status.

Using the Search bar

Use the Search bar to search for assets by asset name, asset type, copy name, or copy type.

Using the Details pane

Clicking any row in the Infrastructure > Copy Management window opens a Details pane to the right of the window. You can also click the arrow to the right of the table at any time to open this pane.

Other details include the protection policy that includes this asset, the storage unit and storage name, and whether the copy is crash-consistent or application-aware. Clicking the Protection Policy link opens the Copy Management > Policy window, where you can view the backup schedules and the assets in the policy.

Using advanced filters to search for specific copies

When the All Copies view is enabled, you can also apply filters in the right pane to narrow the copy search criteria.

The following five categories of filters are available:

  • Creation Date and Time: Select the Between, Before, or After filter and specify a creation date and time range, or leave the default All to view all available copies in the system.
  • Retention Date: Select the Between, Before, or After filter and specify a retention date and time range, or leave the default All to view all available copies in the system.
  • Asset Filters: Select an asset type, and then click Select Assets and Select Policy to open a window that displays only the assets and policies for that asset type. You can then select individual assets and policies to return the search results only for those selections in the Infrastructure > Copy Management window.
  • Copy Filters: Filter copies by Copy Stage, Copy Status, Copy Type, and Size.
  • Location Filters: Click Select Protection Storage to choose a protection storage system, and then click Select Storage Unit to choose one or more storage units within that storage system.
NOTE: The calendar widget used to select a month closes when scrolling through the dropdown list. Select a month by clicking left arrow or right arrow instead.

When a filter is enabled, the filter icon displays next to the category, and the name of the applied filter appears above the list of copies on the Infrastructure > Copy Management window. Clicking Cancel on any of the categories within this pane resets the filter.
