PowerProtect Data Manager 19.16 Virtual Machine User Guide

vSphere Installation Bundle management options outside of PowerProtect Data Manager

Automatic vSphere Installation Bundle (VIB) management is performed primarily within the PowerProtect Data Manager UI. There are, however, circumstances where management outside of PowerProtect Data Manager is required.

If automatic VIB management is required from outside of PowerProtect Data Manager, you can use commands from the ESXi host to manage the following operations:

  • VIB upload
  • VIB install
  • VIB update
  • VIB uninstall

Additionally, you can use the vSphere Client to check and modify the DPD service usage.

Upload the TSDM VIB to an ESXi datastore

  1. Log in to the SSH of the PowerProtect Data Manager server and navigate to the /opt/emc/vib/vib20/tsdm/ directory to locate the VIB file to upload, DEL_bootbank_tsdm_{version}.vib.
  2. From the SSH of the PowerProtect Data Manager server, copy the VIB file from the PowerProtect Data Manager server to the ESXi host by running the following command:

    scp /opt/emc/vib/vib20/tsdm/DEL_bootbank_tsdm_version.vib
    esxi_user@ESXi_host:/vmfs/volumes/datastore-path-where-vib-needs-to-be-uploaded

  3. Ensure that the size of the uploaded VIB on the ESXi datastore matches with the size of the VIB shown in the PowerProtect Data Manager server.

Install or update the TSDM VIB from the ESXi datastore

Before you begin, upload the VIB into one of the datastores attached to the ESXi host.

  1. For VIB installations, verify that a VIB does not already exist in the ESXi host by running the following esxcli command on the ESXi host:

esxcli software vib get -n tsdm

When the VIB is not installed, the output No VIB matching VIB search specification 'tsdm' displays.

  2. To install the VIB on the ESXi host, run the following esxcli command on the ESXi host:

esxcli software vib install -v file:///vmfs/volumes/datastore-path-where-vib-is-uploaded/DEL_bootbank_tsdm_version.vib

NOTE:The installation does not require the ESXi host to be in maintenance mode.
  3. To update an existing VIB on the ESXi host, run the following esxcli command on the ESXi host:

esxcli software vib update -v file:///vmfs/volumes/datastore-path-where-vib-is-uploaded/DEL_bootbank_tsdm_version_to_update.vib

  4. In the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, go to Infrastructure > Asset Sources, select the vCenter server for which the VIBs have been installed or updated, and click Discover.

The Jobs > System Jobs window displays the progress of the manual discovery.

  5. Upon completion of the vCenter discovery, go to the Transparent Snapshot Data Movers tab of the Infrastructure > Protection Engines window to verify that PowerProtect Data Manager displays the VIB as installed or updated for the applicable ESXi host.
  6. In the vSphere Client, verify that the DPD service is started.

Check and modify the DPD service usage

You can check the DPD service status on each ESXi host and edit the startup policy from the vSphere Client

  1. In the vSphere Client, select an ESXI host, and then select the Configure tab.
  2. In the left navigation, select Services.
  3. If the DPD service shows a status of Stopped after installing or updating the VIB, select the service and click Start.
  4. With the DPD service still selected, click Edit Startup Policy.
  5. In the Edit Startup Policy dialog, ensure that the DPD service startup policy on each ESXi host is set to Start and stop with host.

Uninstall the VIB from an ESXi host

  1. Run the following command on the ESXi host:

esxcli software vib remove -n tsdm

  2. Verify that the VIB has been successfully uninstalled by running the following command:

esxcli software vib get -n tsdm

When the VIB is uninstalled, the output No VIB matching VIB search specification 'tsdm' displays.
