OpenManage Enterprise Integration for VMware vCenter Version 1.1 User's Guide

Deployment prerequisites

To deploy ISO profile on bare metal servers, ensure that all the servers meet the following requirements in your environment:

  • All the compliant servers are displayed in the ISO Profile Deployment wizard.
  • Specific hardware support information mentioned in the OpenManage Enterprise Integration for VMware vCenter Compatibility Matrix.
  • Minimum supported versions of the iDRAC firmware and BIOS are available. For specific firmware support information, see OpenManage Enterprise Integration for VMware vCenter Compatibility Matrix.
  • Ensure to create a route between the vCenter, OMEVV, and the iDRAC networks, if vCenter, OMEVV, and iDRAC are connected to different networks.

This requirement is applicable only If the OMEVV appliance is not configured with two network interface which is connected to the vCenter, ESXi, and iDRAC.

  • The Collect System Inventory on Reboot (CSIOR) is enabled.
  • Ensure that the following conditions are met before deploying an Operating System because OMEVV does not support hardware configuration:
    • Enable the Virtualization Technology (VT) flag in BIOS.
    • Ensure to set BOSS to first boot disk :
      • If the user is installing on the Hard Disk Drive, select the appropriate Virtual Disk as First Boot.
      • If the user is installing on BOSS, select the specific AHCI controller having BOSS cards.
  • Ensure that F1/F2 Prompt on Error is disabled on the Miscellaneous Settings page in System BIOS Settings.
  • The custom ESXi images that contain all the Dell drivers are available for deployment. Download the correct images from Drivers & Downloads section available at https://www.dell.com/support.
  • Save the custom images to a CIFS or NFS share location that OMEVV can access during the deployment process. For up-to-date list of supported ESXi versions for this release, see OpenManage Enterprise Integration for VMware vCenter Compatibility Matrix.

The following are applicable for deploying host with dual NICs:

  • Host can have either iDRAC and vCenter management NIC in the same network or in the two distinct networks.
  • Ensure to select the correct vCenter network and OMEVV network applicable to the environment. The OS deployment wizard displays both the OMEVV networks.
  • For using the DNS server, the recommended practices are:
    • OMEVV supports only IPv4 IP addresses. Although both static IP assignment and DHCP assignment are supported, Dell recommends you to assign a static IP address. Assign a static IP address and hostname when you deploy an OME appliance with a valid DNS registration. A static IP address ensures that during the system restart, the IP address of the OME appliance remains same.
    • Ensure that OMEVV hostname entries are present in both forward and reverse lookup zones in your DNS server.
  • Configure your network to match the port requirements.
  • It is recommended to have a single boot disk for a server. If more than one deployment target is available at the server, First Boot Disk cannot be identified deterministically, and Operating System deployment may fail on such server targets.
  • For re-purposing, the server, ensure all the older configuration is wiped off before using it for Operating System deployment.
NOTE Dell PowerEdge 14G and above servers are supported for OS deployment. User facing OS deployment jobs are not created in OpenManage Enterprise.
NOTE After ESXi deployment, if a datastore is required on BOSS, create the same from vCenter or ESXi.
NOTE OEM servers do not support hypervisor Deployment.
