USB Wake feature is inoperable when the lid is closed on Alienware M5 and M17 notebooks.
Alienware M15 and M17 R2, R3, and R4 laptop owners have reported an issue with the USB Wake feature on their computer. This feature does not work when the system lid is closed.
Cause
The engineering department has confirmed that Alienware M15 and M17 R2, R3, and R4 laptops have an option in the BIOS under the Advanced page where USB Wake Support can be enabled or disabled.
This feature allows you to wake the system up by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard. However, this function is disabled whenever the lid is closed.
Resolution
Note: These computers are working as designed.
The USB wake function is disabled on the Alienware M15 and M17 R2, R3, and R4 when the lid is closed. It is not expected that one of these laptops wake from sleep using a USB device while the lid is closed. Neither would they wake if a USB device was disconnected while the lid is closed.
Note: This is the expected behavior for these models while the system lid is closed.
