PowerProtect FLR mount operations fails with ARV0007

Summary: The PowerProtect File Lever Recover (FLR) mount operation fails with ARV0007 indicating the SCSI ID does not have a corresponding Physical Drive.

Symptoms

The PowerProtect virtual machine (VM) Direct Engine solution is used to protect the vSphere environment. The PowerProtect Interface is used to perform a file-level recover (FLR) of a Windows virtual machine (VM). The FLR mount operation to the same VM fails with ARV0007 indicating the SCSI ID does not have a corresponding Physical Drive. The System Job details from the PowerProtect Interface "Jobs > System Jobs > Job ID" shows:

ARV0007: VM Direct engine is unable to restore the virtual machine 'my-vm-name' on vCenter 'my-vcenter.mydomain.com'.

Restore of this virtual machine to the destination vCenter was unsuccessful.

Review the error details and summary log in the Jobs window, or review the log files at /var/log/brs/vmdm for more detailed information to troubleshoot the issue.

Unable to mount disks. Could not mount VMDKs onto VM 'my-vm-name' (vm-3901) filesystems. Unable to perform FLR Agent operation 'mount' on VM my-vm-name (vm-3901). SCSI ID 0/0/1/0 does not have a corresponding PhysicalDrive.

Cause

The VM contains a dynamic disk, which has known limitations for FLR.

Resolution

File-level restores of virtual machines with Windows dynamic disks are supported with the following limitations:
  • The restore can only be performed when recovering to a virtual machine different from the original. Also, this virtual machine cannot be a clone of the original.
  • Perform the restore with a virtual machine administrator user.
  • Windows virtual machines created by cloning or deploying from the same template, then all these Windows virtual machines may end up using the same GUID on their dynamic volumes.
The "File-level restore and SQL restore requirements and limitations" section of the PowerProtect Data Manager VMware Virtual Machine User Guide contains further FLR limitation information.
