Symptoms

  • vProxy backup logs show the error:
Backup has FAILED. Unable to create snapshot. Unable to create non-quiesced snapshot after a retry attempt: An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Could not open or create change tracking file.

 

  • vProxy snapshot-mgr log (\opt\emc\vproxy\runtime\logs\vbackupd\vbackupd-snapmgr.log) shows same error:
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:SS ERROR:  Snapshot creation task failed: An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Could not open or create change tracking file.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:SS ERROR:  Unable to create quiesced snapshot: An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Could not open or create change tracking file.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:SS NOTICE: Snapshot free space threshold validation not requested.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:SS WARN:   Retrying as a non-quiesced snapshot: Unable to create quiesced snapshot: An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Could not open or create change tracking file.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:SS INFO:   Task to create snapshot completed, errors = true.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:SS ERROR:  Unable to create non-quiesced snapshot after a retry attempt: An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Could not open or create change tracking file.

 

Cause

There is a problem with the Change Block Tracking (CBT) files for this VM.

 

Resolution

Change Block Tracking (CBT) files are created and controlled by the ESXi host that the VM is running on. NetWorker is a snapshot requester, VMware takes and deletes the snapshots that are used for the backups. NetWorker cannot work around or bypass a snapshot issue.
