Dell NativeEdge: Extra Dummy tty Interfaces Displayed When 5G Modem Manager Is Corrupted
Summary: When a 5G modem manager session becomes stale or corrupted on an Edge device, the NativeEdge UI may incorrectly display extra dummy tty* interfaces under Hardware → Network Adapters. In this state, cellular connectivity cannot be enabled, and SIM detection may fail. This is a known behavior, not a software defect. The issue can be fully resolved through a hard power‑cycle reset of the device, which forces correct modem and Modem Manager reinitialization. ...

Symptoms
Users may observe the following after onboarding a gateway to Edge Orchestrator (EO):
- Two or more cellular devices shown under Network Adapters
- Presence of dummy
tty*interfaces - Cellular option cannot be enabled
- SIM card not detected
- No functional cellular connectivity
Cause
- The Modem Manager service on the device enters a stale or corrupted state
- Modem ports are incorrectly enumerated
- This results in:
- Dummy
tty*interfaces being exposed to the UI - Failure in SIM detection
- Dummy
- The issue persists across reboots unless a full modem reset is performed
Resolution
Performing a hard power-cycle reset forces a complete modem reset and clean reinitialization of the Modem Manager session. After the power cycle:
- Modem ports are enumerated correctly
- Dummy modem interfaces are no longer present
- SIM detection functions as expected
Once the modem is reinitialized, the issue is no longer reproducible.
Recommendation
If this issue is observed in the field, a hard power-cycle reset is recommended as the first remediation step. If the problem persists after a power cycle, further investigation into modem firmware or device stability may be required.
