PowerStore: Procedure for adding drives on 500T

Note: This issue has been resolved in PowerStoreOS code streams LTS-v4.1.0.4 and v4.3.x and higher.

 

Warning: If the drives to be added are different size than the existing drives, contact Dell Support.

 PowerStore 500T has a software issue that may lead to a single node reboot and sometimes both nodes may reboot leading to service disruption.

 

Target Audience

This procedure is targeted at customers, partners, and Dell employees who plan to add drives to a PowerStore 500T running code levels below PowerStoreOS LTS-v4.1.0.4.

Before You begin

This procedure is only relevant if Slot 12 or above are to be added to a PowerStore 500T base enclosure (DPE) only.

  • This procedure is not relevant when adding drives to a Disk Enclosure (DAE).
  • This procedure is not relevant when adding drives to slots below 12 on the DPE.
  • This procedure is intended for PowerStore 500T running PowerStoreOS 3.5.0 to LTS-v4.1.0.3

Pre-requisites

Warning: If the drives to be added are different size than the existing drives, contact Dell Support.

 

  • Verify that there are no major or critical alerts. Fix any outstanding alerts before the procedure.
  • Download the latest PowerStore Health Check and verify that there are no outstanding issues on the appliance. Fix any outstanding issues.

  • Important: Make sure when adding drives to wait a minimum of 10 seconds between each drive (excluding slot 13 that requires waiting 10 minutes after adding slot-12).

Cautions 

When to Contact Dell Services

  • If the appliance or PowerStore Manager is not responding.
  • If a node unexpectedly reboots.

 

DO NOT

  • Remove or attempt to reseat any component without Dell Services approval.
  • Reboot a node or run another procedure not listed in this KB.

 

Notice: Failure to adhere to the above warning may lead to service disruption and potential data integrity issues.

 

Procedure

  • Add all drives up to (and including) Slot-12.
    • Wait 10 minutes and monitor the system before adding the drive to slot-13.
    • Make sure all the drives are detected and no outstanding issue (no outstanding alert, no unexpected node reboot, hosts have access to all paths)
      If a node reboots at this stage, Contact Dell Technical Support for assistance.
      DO NOT proceed with any additional activity on this appliance!
       
  • Add the remaining drives.
    • Make sure the drives are detected and no outstanding issue (no outstanding alert, no unexpected node reboot, hosts have access to all paths)
    • If a node reboots at this stage, Contact Dell Technical Support for assistance.
    • DO NOT proceed with any additional activity on this appliance!
