No Display or No Boot on a Chromebook 3110 and 3120 2-in-1 or laptop
Dell Chromebook 3110 and 3120 2-in-1, and laptop owners may experience the following startup issues with Chrome version R108 and earlier installed:
- The device may stop responding at the error message page.
- The device may redirect you to the recovery mode page.
- The status Light Emitting Diode (LED) on the device remains lit with no display on the screen.
You may see one of the following errors:

No Boot: The laptop turns on and starts up but does not boot into the Chrome operating system.

No Video: The laptop does not display any images on the screen after it is turned on. (The screen is black or blank.)

Something went wrong: An on-screen message states that Chrome is not starting up properly. Click the Advanced options to check whether the Recovery reason code is 0x01, 0x43, or 0x5b.

Yes, update the laptop to the latest version of the Chrome operating system.

Go to Settings.

Click About Google ChromeOS.

Click Update to the latest OS version.
Note: Update to R109 or later to resolve this issue.

No, follow the on-screen instructions.

Yes, go to the next step.

If you turn the laptop off and press the Esc + F3 + power button together, does it enter recovery mode?

No, the screen remains black or blank. Go to Section 3.

Yes, go to the following steps.

In recovery mode, press the Ctrl + D keys together to enter Developer Mode.
-
Click Confirm when it asks if you want to enable developer mode.
Note: The data on the laptop is reset after switching to developer mode. -
Press the Ctrl + D keys together again once the screen says you are in developer mode. The keyboard shortcut takes into the operating system under developer mode.

Once you have entered the operating system in developer mode, update the Chrome version to the most recent available: (Section 1)

Go to Settings.
-
Click About Google ChromeOS.
-
Click Update to the latest OS version.
-
Reboot the laptop.
-

To exit developer mode, turn on the laptop and select return to secure mode.

Press confirm to go back to normal mode.

The laptop should enter the operating system in normal mode and still be on the updated version of the Chrome operating system.

If you turn the laptop off and press the Esc + F3 + power button together, does it enter recovery mode?

Yes, you can enter recovery mode. Go to Section 2.

No, go to the following steps.

Prepare to recover your laptop using the Google recovery utility on an external USB flash drive.
-
You require the following hardware for these instructions:
-
A working computer that you can use a Chrome browser on.
-
A blank USB flash drive that can hold at least 8 GB. (All data is erased during the flash drive setup.)

Download a new copy of the Chrome operating system on the working computer:
-
Install the Chrome browser.
-
Open the Chrome browser.
-
Install the recovery extension.
-
At the upper right of your browser window, click Extensions.
-
Select the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension to open the extension. If the extension window does not automatically appear on your screen, ensure that it is turned on.

Click Get Started.

Select the Dell Chromebook 3110 or 3110 2-in-1, by clicking the Select a model from a list link. Alternatively, you can type in the model number of the Chromebook you want to recover. (The number is at the bottom of the error message on your Chromebook screen.)

Click Continue.

Insert the empty USB flash drive into the working computer.

In the dropdown menu, choose your USB flash drive location.

Click Continue and then click Create now.

When you get a message that your recovery media is ready, remove your USB flash drive from the working computer.

Begin recovery on the faulty Chromebook by:

Press the Esc + F3 + power button simultaneously to boot the laptop into recovery mode.

Select Recover using external disk and follow the on-screen instructions.
