PowerMax for Splunk Troubleshooting
Summary: What is PowerMax for Splunk and how to investigate issues?
Instructions
What is PowerMax for Splunk?
PowerMax for Splunk is a Splunk Utility add-on that allows Splunk to see metrics, alerts, logging, and more.
PowerMax for Splunk documentation is found at:
- https://github.com/dell/powermax-splunk-addon/issues
- https://github.com/dell/powermax-splunk-app/issues
Where are the Logs for PowerMax for Splunk?
If you are having issues with the technology add-on (TA) or want to check metric collection run performance, look at the TA-specific log file. The default location for this log file is:
- {splunk_install_dir}/var/log/splunk/ta_dellemc_vmax_inputs.log
The second important log is the splunkd log file. If there are issues initializing the TA and nothing appears in the TA log, the splunkd logs may provide answers. When Splunk starts up, there should be warnings or error messages for the TA indicating why there are initialization issues. The default location for this log file is:
- {splunk_install_dir}/var/log/splunk/splunkd.log
How is PowerMax for Splunk Supported?
The code and documentation are released with no warranties or Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and are intended to be supported through a community-driven process.
How to investigate issues?
A new GitHub feature is Discussions. Discussions allow community interaction between developers and users. If you have a general query and want community input rather than opening an issue or sending an email to the developers, Discussions is the place to do it.
When opening an issue, include the following information to help debug:
- Detailed information about the issue
- PowerMax for Splunk version
- Unisphere version
- Splunk Enterprise version
- Splunk Operating system version
- PowerMax for Splunk TA logs and splunkd logs, if required. If these logs contain sensitive data, they can be sent directly to the support contact alias listed in Support Contact.
Before opening a new discussion, check if there are any existing discussions that match what you would like to talk about. If you cannot find an existing discussion, open one and describe your topic as clearly as possible, including TA or App versions, where applicable.
Other Support Options:
In addition to contact using GitHub, it is possible to contact support directly by the support email: powermax.splunk.support@dell.com.
Include as much information as possible about the issue including:
- Detailed information about the issue
- PowerMax for Splunk version
- Unisphere version
- Splunk Enterprise version
- Splunk Operating system version
- PowerMax for Splunk TA logs and splunkd logs, if required
Additional Information
N-2 releases from the current main release include issue and security fixes.
If an issue appears in a base code older than N-2, assistance through the previously mentioned channels is provided as best possible but ultimately upgrading to a newer version of PowerMax for Splunk is the ideal outcome.
As new PowerMax for Splunk releases are made available, anything older than N-2 is marked as End of Life (EOL).
