Remote Working and Studying Best Practices

If you are new to working or studying from home, we provide hints, tips and video resources to enhance that experience to make it as problem-free as possible. Here are some best practice tips:
  • Have a dedicated study or workspace.
  • Create a routine, and stick to that routine
  • Set a beginning and finishing time to work or study.
  • Keep track of the time you spend on different activities, this helps you know how long it takes to perform different tasks and on what you could be wasting your time.
  • Take 10-15 minute breaks.
  • Keep distractions to a minimum in your work or study space.
  • When working or studying from home, security is of the utmost importance, make sure your Wi-Fi network is secure.

Keyboards, Mouse, and Touchpad

Dell provides guidance on how to use and troubleshoot issues with your keyboard, mouse, or touchpad. Select one of the links below to and you are redirected to the Dell Knowledge Base site for that device.

There you can choose whether you want how-to and general usage information, troubleshooting steps, how to download the latest software, drivers (if applicable) or diagnostic tests.

Headsets

You may be new to using a headset for work. When you are having issues being heard or hearing other people, there are a few things to try.

  1. Remove the headset connector from the computer and then reinsert the connector into the computer the same way it came out (most USB connectors only go in one way), making sure that the connector goes all the way into the computer.
    Warning: Do not force the connector into the computer as doing so may damage the computer. Look for something blocking the connector from going in all the way or try another port.
  2. Bookmark this article, save any data and close all programs, and then restart the computer.
  3. When rebooting the computer did not resolve the issue, make sure the headset is selected as the default device:
    1. Make sure the mute button on your headset is not on. Refer to the documentation for more information.
    2. Press and hold the Windows (Windows Button) key, and then press the q key.
    3. In the search box type Audio.
    4. Select Audio settings (System settings) in the list of results.
    5. Touch or click Change the device or app volume.
    6. Using the drop-down menu under Choose your output device, select your headset from the list.
      Note: When you are unsure of the model, refer to the packaging the headset came in or your network administrator.
    7. Using the drop-down menu under Input, select your headset from the list.
      Note: You can test your microphone by talking into the microphone on your headset and noticing if the bar moves under Test your microphone.
    8. Using the slider bat under Volume adjust the volume as desired.
    9. When after adjusting the settings and you still cannot be heard or hear other people, touch or click Troubleshoot within the section you are having issues and follow the prompts.

Remote Connections to Your Business Network (VPN)

In order for your VPN to work correctly, you must be connected to the Internet.

Dell provides guidance on how to use and troubleshoot issues with your Wireless or Wired network, for more information browse to the Dell Networking, WiFi and Bluetooth Knowledge Base site.

There you can choose whether you want how-to and general usage information, troubleshooting steps, and how to download the latest drivers for your Wireless or Wired network.

To run online hardware diagnostics to make sure your hardware is working correctly, refer to the Dell Knowledge Base article How to use the Dell PC Diagnostics. The article explains how to access the hardware diagnostics and the different kinds of tests available for your Dell computer or tablet.
Note: The diagnostics will either fix the problem automatically or guides you through the steps to resolve the problem. When the diagnostic identifies a failing part, depending on the failing part, we will immediately start the process for a free in-warranty replacement part.
