Symptoms



EMC ItemPoint for Exchange GLR failed with the error "Backup browse result is empty" seen in the Avamar Admin GUI. The avmapi.log is present in the Avamar \VAR folder and reports the error:    
 

Error Initializing MAPI utilities. Required version of MAPI/CDO (6.5.8152 or later) not -Found - cannot continue. 
Error code 0x80070002: The system cannot find the file specified (code: 0x80070002) - Abnormal termination. 


When using EMC ItemPoint for Exchange GLR, MAPI\CDO must not be installed on the target client running EMC ItemPoint. 


The MAPI/CDO component and MS Outlook application cannot coexist on the client running EMC ItemPoint for Exchange. Uninstall the MAPI/CDO component if it is installed, and intend to use EMC ItemPoint for Exchange.

Cause

It can happens for the following reasons:   
  • The Avamar Exchange VSS Plugin was not installed correctly.
  • MAPI/CDO was not uninstalled prior to installing the Avamar EMC ItemPoint for Exchange application.



Resolution

Perform the below steps:   
  1. If it is installed, uninstall EMC ItemPoint for Exchange.
  2. Uninstall the Exchange VSS plugin.
  3. A reboot is not required unless the Exchange client is running Avamar 7.3.x. Installations of Avamar 7.3.x require a reboot between the uninstall and reinstall of the Exchange VSS plugin.  
  4. If it is installed, uninstall MAPI/CDO.
  5. Reinstall the Avamar Exchange VSS plugin and select EMC ItemPoint as your GLR option.
  6. Complete the configuration of the Exchange client.
