PowerScale OneFS 9.8.0.0 Web Administration Guide

APEX File Storage for Azure architecture overview

PowerScale nodes are Virtual Machines (VMs) in Microsoft Azure. The backend storage consists of Azure managed disks. The disks are off-rack networked storage and are remote to the VMs. The architecture also consists of Azure temporary storage on a local SSD, which is host-local and presented as a single virtual disk. PowerScale OneFS nodes on Azure use the temporary drive for the software journal.

During deployment of APEX File Storage for Azure, administrators have root access and instantiate the cloud resources in the Microsoft Azure subscription including:

  • Cluster configuration at deployment
  • Cluster nodes (VMs)
  • Azure managed disks (Premium SSDs and Standard HDDs)
  • Networking
    • Virtual Network Interface Cards (NIC)
    • IP management of internal and external subnets
    • DNS
    • IP failover
  • Internal and external Network Security Groups (NSG)
  • Node VM placement groups
Detailed information about these cloud resources is described in the next section.
