Upgrading the ThinOS firmware

It is recommended to use the Wyse Management Suite version 4.0 or later to upgrade your ThinOS firmware to the latest 9.x version. You can also use the USB Imaging Tool version 3.4.0 or later to install the ThinOS Merlin image on your thin client.

The overall upgrade process using Wyse Management Suite includes the following tasks:

  1. Register your thin client to Wyse Management Suite.
  2. Download the ThinOS operating system image. See Download the ThinOS firmware.
  3. Upgrade the BIOS on your device to the current version mentioned in the BIOS details table below.
  4. Upgrade the ThinOS firmware from 9.x to later versions. See Upgrade ThinOS 9.x to later versions.
  5. Deploy the application packages. See Upload and push ThinOS 9.x application packages.

The following firmware upgrade scenarios are supported for upgrading to the latest ThinOS version:

  • ThinOS 9.1.3129 or later versions > ThinOS YYMM

From ThinOS 2303, Servicing mode has been added to the installation process. The following changes can be observed as part of this addition:

  • Updated the installation order from OS > BIOS > Application to BIOS > OS > Application. After a BIOS update, ThinOS reboots and then continues to update the operating system. After an operating system update, ThinOS reboots and then continues to update the application.
  • The operating system, BIOS, and applications are downloaded in the background and installed in servicing mode. Click the download icon on the taskbar to check the download status.
  • When ThinOS enters servicing mode, ThinOS automatically logs off when you are logged in. You cannot log in until the update process is finished.
  • If the update fails, ThinOS automatically exits servicing mode after a countdown. After exiting the servicing mode, you can log in to continue your work.
  • The applications that fail to update are displayed in the failed application list.
  • If you update an invalid application package, like trying to install an application that is released prior or as part of ThinOS 2205, the update fails. Reboot your device and the device does not download and install the invalid application package again.
  • From ThinOS 2308, if the battery charge is lower than 50%, the update process does not start even when the power adapter is connected. Once the device is charged to 50%, the update process starts.

If you change the WMS server or group in the Central Configuration window when there is a notification window with a new available firmware or application package upgrade, a dialog box is displayed to notify that the upgrade is going to be terminated.

For detailed information about the upgrade process, see the latest Migration Guide at www.dell.com/support.
