Ultrasharp Monitors Show No Display After Power Off and On When Connected to a Dell Dock Using DisplayPort with the MST Option Turned On

Symptoms

No Video After Turning Monitor Off and On

When Dell Ultrasharp monitors are connected to a Dell docking station using a DP or mini DP connection with the MST option enabled. No video appears after the monitor is powered off and on.

Cause

Affected Docking Stations:

  • Dell Thunderbolt Dock (TB16)
  • Dell Precision Dual USB Type-C Thunderbolt (TB18)
  • Dell Docking Station (WD19/WD19S)
  • Dell Performance Dock (WD19DC/WD19DCS)
  • Dell Thunderbolt Dock (WD19TB/WD19TBS)


Affected Monitors:

  • U2415H
  • U2417H
  • U2515H
  • UP2516D
  • U2518D
  • U2715H
  • UP2716D
  • U2717D
  • U2917W
  • UP3017
  • U3417W

Resolution

To get video back to the monitor, you can disconnect, then reconnect the DP cable or power the monitor off and on. If you do not want to complete these actions, use the following steps as a workaround to this behavior.

  1. Set the MST option on the monitor to off.
    To do this, go to the Monitor On-Screen Display (OSD) Menu > Display > MST > Off (Figure 1).

  2. If you are using a DP daisy chain for a multimonitor setup, connect each monitor directly to the docking station.

If using TB16 dock, connect monitors directly using DP to DP cable and the other cable being HDMI or Mini-DP to DP.

If using the WD19/WD19S dock, connect each monitor directly to the DP ports using the DP to DP cables.
