Deploying the PowerFlex storage virtual machine (SVM)

This topic describes how to deploy the SVM and prepare it for installation of PowerFlex. This is not necessary for SDCs installed on ESXi, but all other components are installed on Storage virtual machines (SVM).

About this task

NOTE: Before deployment, ensure that networks for each ESXi to be part of the system have a properly defined Port Group and VMkernel.

To deploy the SVM on the ESXi, perform the following:

Steps

  1. Download (and extract, if necessary) the files for your operating system.
NOTE: The SDC offline ESXi 6.0 bundle is the same for all ESXi 6.x versions.

You can download all files from the Complete Software download for your software version, available from Online Support (https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/scaleio/drivers).

To install with a customized Java configuration, see the Deploy Dell PowerFlex , "PowerFlex Gateway installation with a custom Java configuration."

  2. Use the vSphere web client to connect to a vCenter.
  3. From the main window, select Hosts and Clusters.
  4. From the left panel, select the ESXi on which you would like to deploy the OVA. Right-click it, and select Deploy OVF Template.
The Deploy OVF Template wizard appears.
  5. Enter the full path to the OVA, and click Next.
  6. Assign a unique name to the VM, and select a local (DAS) datastore to deploy the OVA, accept remaining default values in the wizard, and click Finish.
  7. After the OVA is deployed, click the VMs and Templates tab.
  8. Locate the VM that you deployed, right-click it, select Template and then Convert to Template.
  9. Locate the new template, right-click it, and select New VM from this Template….
  10. Enter a unique name for the VM, and click Next.
  11. Select the ESXi server on which you wish to deploy the SVM, and click Next.
  12. Select a local (DAS) datastore for the SVM, and click Finish.
  13. Repeat steps 10-13 for each ESXi server on which you wish to deploy an SVM.
  14. On each ESXi physical host, configure the network and NTP (and DNS, if necessary).
    1. Using the console, start the SVM, and log in.
The default user name is root, and the default password is admin.
    2. Configure the network:
      • IP address
      • Gateway address
      • DNS
      • NTP server
NOTE: When using the OVA, the installation packages can be found in /root/install/.
  15. On each SVM in the system, add the local disk devices as RDM devices.
Perform this task by changing the SVM settings.
  16. Configure each ESXi host to enable Start and Stop Virtual Machines with the system, and set the SVM to do Automatic Startup.
  17. Install the GPG key. From the VxFlex OS installation folder, run rpm --import RPM-GPG-KEY-ScaleIO on every server.
  18. On each SVM in the system, install the relevant PowerFlex components, using the procedures for manual deployment on SVMs.
The packages are located under /root/install
NOTE: After manual deployment on ESXi, you must perform manual memory allocation on the SVM, as described in the Configure and Customize Dell PowerFlex, "SVM manual memory allocation."
