Register the vSphere PowerFlex plug-in

Use PowerCLI for VMware to register the PowerFlex plug-in on a vCenter.

Prerequisites

NOTE: Adobe Flash Player reached end-of-life on December 31st, 2020. To use the vSphere PowerFlex plug-in from the Flash-based vSphere web client, apply a workaround for browsers as explained in the following knowledge base article:

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000181275/scaleio-vxflex-adobe-flash-end-of-life-powerflex-vsphere-plugin-workaround

  • Ensure that earlier versions of the PowerFlex plug-in have been cleaned from the vCenter.
  • Ensure that there is communication between the vSphere web client server (usually installed on the vCenter) and the host storing the PowerFlex plug-in file.
  • Obtain the vCenter credentials.
  • Ensure that you have downloaded and extracted the required software package from the Customer Support site for your SDC's operating system.
NOTE: Only ESXi v6.x-based systems can be installed and managed using the vSphere PowerFlex plug-in. ESXi v7 is not supported.

About this task

To use your own host, see "Register the vSphere PowerFlex plug-in manually".

Steps

  1. Copy the following file to your designated host (preferably your vCenter), that has PowerCLI for VMware installed:
    EMC-ScaleIO-vSphere-plugin-installer-3.6-X.<build>.zip
  2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file.
  3. Using PowerCLI for VMware, set to Run as administrator, run the following script:
    VxFlexOSPluginSetup-3.6-X.<build>.ps1
    1. Type the vCenter name or IP address, user name, and password.
You can also use this script to unregister a PowerFlex plug-in or to create an SVM template.
    2. For Choose mode, select option 1, Register PowerFlex plug-in.
    3. Read the upgrade notice, and type y to continue.
    4. For Select Registration Mode, select Standard (simplified, using embedded Tomcat).
This step may take a few minutes.
      NOTE:

You can use the Advanced option to install the PowerFlex plug-in using a PowerFlex Gateway from a previous installation, or using your own web service. In either case, you must place this version’s plugin.zip file ( EMC-ScaleIO-vSphere-web-plugin-3.6-X.<build>.zip) in your resources folder before running the installation. To use a previous PowerFlex Gateway, the resource folder is PowerFlex Gateway installation folder\webapps\root\resources.

    5. If necessary, accept the thumbprint.
  4. Log in to the vSphere web client.
If you are already logged in, log out, then log in again.
  5. Return to the PowerCLI window, and press ENTER to return to the script menu and complete the PowerFlex plug-in installation.
  6. From the vSphere Home tab, verify that the PowerFlex icon PowerFlex icon is visible in the Inventories section.

Results

The PowerFlex plug-in is registered. If the PowerFlex icon is missing, the vCenter server failed to register the PowerFlex plug-in, due to one of the following reasons:
  • Connectivity problem between the vSphere web client server and the host storing the PowerFlex plug-in (for example, network / firewall etc.).

Resolution: Verify that there is communication between the vSphere web client server and the host storing the PowerFlex plug-in.

  • URL problem when using an external web server.

Resolution: Verify that the URL is https:// and is pointing to the correct web server IP address (PowerFlex Gateway).

For information about how to use the log to troubleshoot problems that may arise, see "Troubleshooting PowerFlex plug-in registration issues".
