Dell NetWorker 19.9 Administration Guide

Introduction

NetWorker orchestrated replication allows NetWorker users to use a Data Domain as the primary backup target, and use the Data Domain mtree replication to maintain a remote copy of their backup data. NetWorker orchestrated replication exports NetWorker metadata of the replicated volumes and the save sets from the source NetWorker server to a destination NetWorker server, where the destination NetWorker server has the metadata of replicated volumes and save sets. It enables a disaster recovery strategy to be deployed between NetWorker servers. NetWorker orchestrated replication feature allows remote recoveries from the replicated data copies either with no or minimal additional work by the user.

NetWorker orchestrated replication consists of following high-level steps:
  1. Set up Data Domain mtree replication manually in Data Domain.
  2. Export metadata for replicated volumes and save sets from the source NetWorker server.
  3. Import metadata for replicated volumes and save sets on the target NetWorker server.

A new NetWorker action type dd-replication has been added to perform the NetWorker orchestrated replication export and import.

NOTE:NMC/NWUI is not supported for creating the NetWorker dd-replication action.
NOTE: Data Domain supports various replications, but NetWorker supports only mtree replication.
NOTE: Volume and device that are imported on the target NetWorker server are read-only. Hence, save sets cannot be deleted and volume cannot be labeled. However, save sets and volumes can be deleted from the source NetWorker server. When a save set is deleted from the source NetWorker server, save set data is deleted from target volume of the target NetWorker server but save set records still exist in media db due to Data Domain mtree replication. Such save sets cannot be used for recovery.
NOTE: NetWorker orchestrated replication must be run on the same operating system platforms (both source and target NetWorker servers must be either windows or Linux. Cross platform NetWorker orchestrated replication is not supported).
