Dell NetWorker 19.9 Administration Guide

NetWorker orchestrated replication export

Performing a NetWorker orchestrated replication export

Backup data is automatically replicated from source Data Domain device to target Data Domain device by Data Domain mtree replication. However, NetWorker metadata for those replicated volume and save sets must be exported first from the source NetWorker server, and then imported later in the target NetWorker server. The NetWorker Orchestrated replication action that is configured in export mode triggers the export for every NSR DD Device replication resource that is configured in the NetWorker dd-replication action sequentially.

Export operation exports metadata for each save set on the replicated volume from the source NetWorker server. Save set metadata consists of:
  • Save set Client name.
  • Save set media record.
  • Client index for save set.

Client index is only exported when the Exclude indexes attribute is set to No in NSR DD Device replication resource. Index export is configured for individual device.

Once the source NetWorker server metadata is exported for replicated volume and save sets, a new save set is created for the metadata and copied to the source Data Domain. This metadata save set is replicated to the target Data Domain by the Data Domain mtree replication. The replicated metadata save set on the target Data Domain device is accessed later by the target NetWorker server to import metadata.
NOTE:NetWorker uses DD Rest API to query the status of mtree replication. Therefore, you must update Source DD with management host, admin username, and password details in NSR Data Domain resource before starting the export.

Verifying NetWorker orchestrated replication export

On successful completion of export, a report file is generated. This report file contains the list of save sets and associated clients which are exported. You can use this file for troubleshooting and verification.

The NetWorker Orchestrated replication export report is generated based on the Last Replication Time (epoch format). Last Replication Time is the time when export was run successfully on the source NetWorker server.

The NetWorker orchestrated replication export report is found on the source server at /nsr/replication/<replication-resource name>/<Target-Server>/<last replication time>/replication_report.txt .

NOTE:The report file is only for troubleshooting and verification purpose and should not be modified and deleted.

Export Logs

The following logs are created for export:
  • NetWorker orchestrated replication Action Log: This action log is found on the source server at /nsr/logs/policy/<Policy-Name>/<Workflow-Name>/<action name>_job id.raw.
  • NetWorker orchestrated replication Export Log for each replication resource: Export log is present at /nsr/logs/policy/replication/<replication-resource>/<last replication time>_<job id>.raw .
NOTE:If there are multiple replication resources, export log is created for each replication resource.

NetWorker orchestrated incremental replication export

Each NSR DD Device replication resource has an attribute Last replication time. This attribute captures the time when last metadata replication took place for this device. When a new NSR DD Device replication resource is created, the value of Last replication time is zero. In that case, all save sets are considered for export. When dd-replication action is run again, it checks if there was any new Data Domain mtree replication. The new Data Domain mtree replication time is then compared with Last replication time, and a list of differentials save sets is generated for that device. This list is used for incremental export.
