NetWorker orchestrated replication import

Performing NetWorker Orchestrated replication import

Once the source NetWorker server exports the metadata, the metadata is written under source volume on source Data Domain. This data is replicated by Data Domain mtree replication on target volume.

On the target NetWorker server, the NetWorker orchestrated replication action is configured in import mode as dd-replication action. When dd-replication action is run by associated policy, it triggers the import for every NSR DD Device replication resource that is configured in the NetWorker dd-replication action. A dd-replication action can have multiple NSR DD Device replication resources for each device under same Data Domain mtree. The import is run sequentially for all the devices.

This NetWorker dd-replication action in import mode imports the clients, save sets and, indexes at the target NetWorker server.

Prerequisite
  • Run server protection before running import. If import fails or any type of corruption occurs, perform nsrdr to recover NetWorker. There is no way to rollback import.
Import action performs the following:
  1. NetWorker client resource is created for every exported NetWorker client If it does not exist on the target server.
  2. All the exported save sets are imported in the NetWorker media db.
  3. Client index is only imported when the Exclude indexes attribute is set to No in NSR DD Device replication resource. Index import can be configured for individual devices. You cannot import indexes if they were not exported.

Verifying NetWorker orchestrated replication import

  • Verifying Clients: After the successful NetWorker orchestrated replication on the target NetWorker server, the replicated new NetWorker clients are created in replicated state, and the existing NetWorker clients remain in the same state. Replicated new NetWorker clients can be verified using nsradmin or NMC.
  • Verifying indexes: By default, NetWorker indexes are not exported or imported. In case indexes are large and may take longer duration, exporting and importing indexes can be ignored by setting the Exclude indexes attribute to Yes in NSR DD Device replication resource. Once indexes are imported, you must rebuild the indexes for browsable recovery. You can rebuild the indexes by running nsrck -ML1 command. Once indexes are rebuild, verify indexes using nsrinfo utility.
  • Verifying Save Sets:
    • After the import is successful, run the command mminfo -avot to list all the save sets including the replicated save sets.
    • Replicated save set has sflag as sflags=vMF, where M represents the replicated save set, and the same can be validated using the command mminfo -S.
      mminfo -S -q "client=<client_name>......"

      level=manual sflags=vMF size=8420 files=3.....
  • Verifying Volume: After the replicated volumes are imported, the volumes have the flag set as 0x8020. It helps to differentiate between the replicated and the regular volumes. message

Import NetWorker orchestrated replication report

The NetWorker orchestrated replication import report is generated based on the Last Replication Time (epoch format). Last Replication Time is the time when export was run successfully on the source NetWorker server. The NetWorker orchestrated replication import report is found on the target NetWorker server at /nsr/replication/<replication-resource name>/<Target-Server>/<last replication time>/replication_report.txt.
NOTE:The report is only for troubleshooting and verification purpose. Do not modify or delete it.

Import logs

  • NetWorker orchestrated replication action log: Replication action log is found on the target server at /nsr/logs/policy/<Policy-Name>/<Workflow-Name>/<action name>_job id.raw.
  • NetWorker orchestrated replication import log: Import log is found at /nsr/logs/policy/replication/<replication-resource>/<last replication time>_<job id>.raw. If there are multiple replication resources, import log is created for each replication resource.
Notes
  • To recover save sets from replicated Data Domain Device, device must be mounted in read-only mode.
  • Since device can only be mounted in read-only mode, the server does not select replicated volume for new backups.
